Cyr Iron Mountain Road Summary
Hellgate Hunters & Anglers Board Member Bill Geer has been working since 2018 on re-opening Forest Service Road 344 (Cyr-Iron Mountain Road) in the Superior area. It has been illegally closed by a locked steel gate installed by local private landowners. The locked gate now substantially inhibits access that had previously been available to the public to hunt, fish and recreate on portions of the Lolo National Forest and state lands behind the gate. Ten Superior County residents – including former Superior Fire Chief John Woodland, State Representative Denley Loge from House District 14 and local rancher Diane Magone – protested the gate closure at a meeting with the Mineral County Commissioners.
UPDATE: April 2023
Mineral County Commissioners voted to initiate legal action to open Cyr Iron Mountain Road.
UPDATE: February 2023
On Friday, February 17th, Deputy County Attorney Wallace Congdon will request the County Commission approve legal action to re-open the road for the public. Wallace says he needs as many local sportsmen and women as possible to attend the Mineral County Commission meeting on Friday to support his request.
The Mineral County Commission meeting is at 1:30 pm at the County Building at 300 River Street in Superior. This is an urgent but critically important request for your attendance, if possible.
