We Take Access Seriously

If you’ve run into an access issue, here our your first steps:

  • Learn about your access rights by visiting the Know Your Rights page.

  • If you have a specific question about Montana road law, including petitions to abandon or close a county road, review this document. If you have concerns about a blocked county road, this brochure may be helpful.

  • If you know what department or agency is in control of the area in question, reach out to them directly for more information.

  • If you have a general question that is not a formal access complaint, message our Director of Access Investigations at haley@plwa.org.

If you have taken the above steps and have been unable to reach a resolution or need assistance moving your complaint forward, file a complaint using the form below:

More About the AIRS Program

PLWA’s Access Issue Reporting System is the first of its kind to address access issues across our state. The goals of the AIRS program are:

  1. Provide a central point for the public to register access complaints.

  2. Collect data about the volume, type, and location of access issues.

  3. Track the evolution of access issues occurring in Montana.

  4. Increase the efficiency of investigation and resolution of access issues interfering with the public’s ability to reach and recreate on Montana public lands and waters.

The AIRS program relies on partnerships with members, volunteers, communities, businesses, organizations, and other nonprofits to accomplish our work.
